ASL Grammar: Declarative Sentences


Declarative sentences are statements. They can be affirmative, negative, or neutral statements. Each are recognized by the different non-manual markers that are used.


Affirmative Declarative Statements:

    • Nod your head while signing entire statement (use appropriate facial expression to show the degree or intensity of your affirmation)


Negative Declarative Statements:

    • Shake your head, scrunch up your face, frown, etc (use appropriate facial expression toshow the degree or intensity of your negation)


Neutral Declarative Statements:

    • Neutral head position (no shaking or nodding)
